Arid Communities
and Technologies (ACT) is a professional voluntary organization based at in the
arid region of Kutch. The aim of the organization is to strengthen the
livelihoods of communities in arid and semi-arid regions by supporting
communities to resolve ecological constraints through facilitation, or by
providing access to technologies and also to endangering technological and
institutional solutions. Registered under Societies Act, 1860 and Charitable
Trust Act, 1950, ACT was founded by a group of like-minded young professionals
interested in improving the quality of development programs through the use of
technology.
ACT attempts to
strengthen livelihoods of communities in arid and semi-arid region by resolving
ecological constraints through provision or facilitation access to technologies
and engendering technologies. To fulfill the aim of organization, ACT works through the following
major programs:
1.Participatory Groundwater Management(PGWM) in
Arid Regions of the country.
2.Demonstration of Urban Watershed through PGWM
approach.
3.Training and Capacity building of Barefoot
Hydro-geologists.
ACT extends technical support to
individuals, institutions and communities working in the field, to undertake
innovative and action-research oriented projects following an agenda set by the
communities themselves. One of its core areas of work is the implementation of
innovative projects like community aquifer management. ACT also builds a
knowledge-base of technological and institutional solutions for natural resource
management in arid and semi-arid regions. It develops Geographic Information
Systems-enabled databases of natural resources and associated knowledge systems
of Kutch and other arid parts of Gujarat. One of its key activities is to
engage in policy advocacy at various levels through collaborative activities
with Government and Non-governmental agencies.
The organization is working in water and land management areas and has experiences various kinds of projects focused on land and water resource management planning, impact assessments, geo-hydrological studies, basin management, feasibility studies, action research, and capacity building in rural as well as urban areas. In various parts of states as well as country, organization has been executed various projects since last 18 years.
